Conservatory of Music wins SupportMusic Merit Award

Columbus MS Receives National Recognition for Music Education Program

CCMS is one of 1% of schools in nation to receive distinction

Canoga Park, California – April 4th, 2017 – LAUSD’S Christopher Columbus MS has been honored with the SupportMusic Merit Award from The NAMM Foundation for its outstanding commitment to music education. CCMS – Conservatory of Music is one of only 1% of schools in the nation to be recognized with this prestigious award in 2017.

The SupportMusic Merit Award recognizes individual schools that demonstrate outstanding achievement in efforts to provide music access and education to all students.

To qualify for the SupportMusic Merit Award, CCMS – Conservatory of Music answered detailed questions about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction time, facilities, support for the music program, and community music-making programs. Responses were verified with school officials and reviewed by The Music Research Institute at the University of Kansas.

This award recognizes that CCMS – Conservatory of Music is leading the way with music learning opportunities as outlined in the new federal education law, the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). The legislation, signed into law in December 2015 and awaiting state implementation, designates music and the arts as important elements of a well-rounded education for all children.

Conservatory of Music receives donation

Yamaha Corp, in partnership with the Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation, donated 25 portable keyboards to CCMS, Conservatory of Music, CoM, Academy. Nearly 300 of our students participate in CoM. Yamaha sponsored a social media campaign called #YamahaSharetheGift last December. The Mr. Hollands Opus Foundation selected CCMS to receive a donation because of its commitment to music education.

"We believe in the life-changing effects of music education", said Christine Pham, a marketing specialist for Yamaha. "We are excited to be providing instruments that will allow students to learn and grow for years to come!."
